TO Scoop: How To Celebrate Holidays in Toronto

Christmas lights, gifts, late shopping hours, hot chocolate with marshmallows and snow (saving the best for last).

Yes, it’s time for me to talk about Christmas! Did you know? In the Philippines, they celebrate Christmas as soon as the calendar month ends with “ber” and in this case, it’s September. In Australia, their Christmas happens to be summer so don’t be surprised if someone is throwing a massive BBQ party. In Venezuela, they close down the streets on Christmas Eve so everyone can make their way to church, in roller blades (Yeah, listen to me scream “holy!”). Sadly, I’m stuck here in my lovely city of Toronto this holiday and possibly 95% of my circle. There is nothing wrong with that, especially, if adulthood is calling your name out loud to come back 15 times every day.

I have to admit, Toronto turned up the notch this year and full blown embracing Christmas more than ever. Check out my suggestions below:

Imagine the crowd of people huddling and holding their hot chocolate cup with marshmallows, walking around with their family or significant other and swaying left to right while watching the Christmas carollers. Every year, from mid-November to couple days before Christmas, you can visit the Distillery Historic District and rediscover the magic of the holiday spirit.

What’s New: Flock of Pink Christmas Trees behind the heart art piece. Perfect for couples!

FYI: $6.00 admission fee on weekends starting at 5pm on Fridays. Children under the age of 2 are free. Admission is free of charge on weekdays.

Similar to Toronto Christmas Market but larger. However, this one is inspired by the European Market. When I heard about this, I am ecstatic! It brought back memories from my trip last year in Europe where Christmas Markets are known during this time of the year. Located near the city hall (and walking distance from my work), it’s the perfect location for everyone. There are rows of food trucks, markets and maybe sneak in a romantic hour of ice skating.

What’s New: Everything in here is new but the Christmas tree & skating ring.

FYI: No admission but bring extra cash for a cute ride on the classic carousel or tea cups.  Open weekdays 11:30 am – 9:00 PM, Saturdays 10:00 am – 10:00 PM, and Sundays 10:00 am – 9:00 pm until December 23rd.

Who doesn’t love markets nearby your daily work walking routine? Ah, I’m so happy they are bringing this back. Opened until December 16, this market showcase specialty retail vendors, artisans, designers, food merchants and cultural institutions.  It’s a perfect destination for Torontonians and visitors (as you know this is in front of VIA Rail/ Union Station, hence, the name) to browse, shop, embrace the holiday spirit and simply, kill some time!

What’s New: New vendors from last year, plus the donut wall from Modern Jelly. Yeah, I got you with donuts, huh?

FYI: It’s free for everybody so why not?

Bloor-Yorkville Village

Looking for a peaceful place to shop or walk around with your holiday beverage but enjoy the beautiful, peaceful holiday decors. I’d recommend the Bloor-Yorkville Village. Luxurious window displays, amazing vibes and fewer people. I, myself, had a couple of visits there so far this year and enjoy the vibe. Enjoy your Christmas shopping with the vibe of Upper State New York & Berlin.

That’s it for my recommendation! There are more activities to do in Toronto for holidays if any of the above doesn’t appeal to you. Harbourview has tons of activities going on every weekend and if that still fancy you, check out other GTA events at Mississauga, Oakville, Burlington, Scarborough, Vaughan and more.

I’m also curious on how you celebrate your holidays locally. Comment below to share 🙂
